- Journal entries
- If I find something entertaining, interesting, or timely, I post an excerpt, transcript or link. It's a sort of personal scrapbook. I would be surprised if any entry ever prompted comment from others, but naturally I would have no objections.
- Livejournal 'friends'
- An LJ 'friend', in the context of this journal, is an account whose entries I wish to aggregate on my 'friends' page, so as to avoid the effort of clicking a link or typing a URL to read the latest entry. This is especially important if the 'friend' journal in question isn't updated regularly.
- Personal background
- Describing myself in detail could discourage some people from leaping to personally illuminating conclusions, and in such cases my curiosity exceeds my civility, so I'm disinclined to be thorough. That said, even the most active imagination needs something to work with, so I provide these pieces of information, for whatever they might be worth:
- I have spent roughly half my life in each of two geographical regions, roughly 2500 miles apart.
- I have never personally owned a pet larger than my hand.
- If I had to guess, I would say that, measured by weight, my possessions are comprised of roughly 1/3 vehicles, 1/3 books and bookcases, and 1/3 everything else.
- Compared to the mean LJ user (as defined by these demographics and readily available correlated statistics) I am very probably:
- significantly taller
- noticably thinner
- decidedly older (if you are 21, you are already older than roughly half the users of Livejournal)
- more intelligent (no good stats here -- just speculating that the LJ mean IQ is close to that of U.S. college freshmen)
- less arrogant
- more civil
- less outgoing
I may have taken three of these qualities to a fault, and in arrogance and civility I hope to amend this by regressing a little toward the mean. - I would like
- A whole room devoted to the accessible storage of books, sorted by category, and cross-referenced by title, author, and subject. I would call it my 'library'. It would be cool.
- A planetarium to sleep in.
- A one-man sailing vessel suitable for circumnavigating the globe.
- An apartment in the tower of a gothic ruin overlooking the lonely windswept moors, where the doleful sound of distant church bells at dusk ushers in the coming night. It should be dry, clean, and reasonably bug-free. (a fixer-upper in a nice town might work as an alternative)
- A Roomba
- My own custom MUD. All things considered, I don't know why I don't have one already.
- Eyes that work all by themselves.
- A mass spectrometer
- A bathroom tiled with Penrose's quasiperiodic tilings, in tasteful colors
- A decorative, glittering mobile of functioning computers to hang in an unused corner of my dwelling, taking the place of a hanging plant. They should talk to each other, and make useful observations.
- Several casual acquaintances who can correctly define 'capitalism'.
- Disclaimer
In another context, I would simply expect people to figure this out, but on Livejournal it might easily be overlooked: None of the entries are in 'my own voice' -- everything's taken from other sources (see above re: scrapbook). While I am nearly always quoting, the views of the quoted sources do not necessarily reflect my own. I'm using the journal to accumulate items I've encountered, not as a means of speaking-by-proxy. Also, if you're planning to spam the journal, you'll want to read more than one entry first before placing your advertisement. In future, I don't think I'm going to take a polite approach on this point.
